Hoodoos

Until our trip out west, I had never heard of a "Hoodoo".  Hoodoos are geological formations caused by erosion over the ages.  Some of them are as tall as 150 feet.  They are quite amazing.  The hoodoos in my painting were in Bryce Canyon in Utah.  As I was admiring them, the sun was shining on the dun colored rock "threesome" causing them to stand out considerably.  I think of them as the Hoodoo Sisters and have named this little painting just that.

Thanks for stopping by.

Hello.....

In September, my husband and I packed up our camper van and our 2 dogs, and headed west.  Intending to paint my way across the country, I packed my water-mixable oils and about 50 sheets (6" x 8") of watercolor paper that I had gessoed on both sides.  And even though I was all prepared, I just didn't do it.  To make things worse, I'm not even sure why.

But... I did take hundreds of photos and since we've been back (we were gone for 6 weeks), I've been painting often and using those photos as reference.  Since I had the stack of prepared paper, I thought it would be perfect for painting "studies".  It would allow me to experiment without being concerned about the cost of a canvas.  Any of them that are particularly exciting, I plan to paint again on a larger canvas.

This blog has been created as a place to show these little paintings.  I hope you'll enjoy seeing them as much as I enjoy painting them.

First up is one I figure is required for any series depicting the "Great Out West".  A skull.  I believe this is a Mule deer skull, but am not positive about that.  We were in Keystone, South Dakota when I found this.  Mt. Rushmore is in Keystone, for those of you who might not know that.

Thanks for stopping by and please stop by again soon - I'll be posting more as they are finished.
